Courtside Courtesy: Respecting the Game from the Sidelines in Volleyball

Whether you're a player, coach, parent, or fan, attending a volleyball game is always an exciting experience. The energy is high, the action is fast, and every point counts. But amid all the cheering and competition, there’s one thing that should never be forgotten: courtside courtesy. Showing respect and proper behavior on the sidelines creates a positive, safe, and enjoyable environment for everyone involved—on and off the court.

Why Courtside Courtesy Matters

Volleyball is a team sport that thrives on communication, focus, and momentum. The atmosphere in the gym can greatly affect how athletes perform. While enthusiasm from the crowd is encouraged, poor sportsmanship, distractions, or disrespectful behavior from the sidelines can hurt the game and the experience for everyone.

Practicing good courtside manners not only supports your team, but it also teaches players and spectators the value of respect, sportsmanship, and community.

For Fans and Parents

As a spectator, it’s natural to cheer loudly and get excited when your team makes a great play. However, it’s important to cheer positively and respectfully. That means:

  • Applauding good plays from both teams

  • Avoiding negative comments toward players, referees, or coaches

  • Not yelling during a player's serve or during critical points

  • Staying seated or moving between points—not in the middle of a rally

  • Keeping noise-makers or distractions to a minimum in indoor settings

Parents especially play a powerful role in setting the tone. Encouraging your athlete, win or lose, and modeling calm, respectful behavior helps create a more positive playing environment for all athletes.

For Coaches and Players on the Bench

Even when players are off the court, they still represent their team. Bench players should support teammates with energy and focus—but without becoming a distraction to the opposing team or referees.

Coaches can also model courtside courtesy by keeping their interactions with officials respectful, managing frustration constructively, and encouraging their teams to play with class. Arguing calls aggressively or showing visible frustration can escalate tension and take the focus away from the game itself.

For Referees and Officials

Referees and line judges have an important role, and while they’re not part of the crowd, they deserve courtside respect. Officials make split-second decisions and do their best to ensure a fair game. Mistakes happen, but they should never be met with yelling, personal attacks, or disrespect from the sidelines.

Treating referees with fairness and gratitude helps maintain the integrity of the sport and sets a good example for players and fans alike.

Building a Better Game Day Experience

When everyone practices good courtside etiquette, the result is a better experience for athletes, coaches, families, and fans. Games run smoother, players stay focused, and the spirit of the sport is upheld.

In the end, volleyball is more than just points and wins—it’s about teamwork, growth, and community. Whether you're cheering from the bleachers, coaching from the sidelines, or rotating in for the next serve, remember that courtesy counts. Show up, speak up positively, and support the game the right way.
